Arguably the best Hindi movie ever made, Taal is a story of two men, one fast losing his lust for life due to an unending string of failures, and the other on the verge of his first success. As their paths cross, they build a friendship which bridges an insurmountable gap in age. But as time passes by for both of them, secrets are revealed and trust is shattered. With rage and guilt dominating their hearts, they take impulsive decisions that plunge them into new traps at every step. What the future will bring to them is anybody's guess. A natural disaster, a kidnapping, a murder, blackmailing the police and finally their own disintegrating sanity are just some of the elements that Taal employs at its disposal. The film shifts between flashbacks set in the past and present clashing situations, creating an atmosphere of impending doom that keeps you guessing throughout. Taal portrays life as it really is; against all odds, if you can make one person happy, but yet if only one person is ever happy.. It shows how people may feel about each other but ultimately it's about their actions; what they do to make others around them happy even if it involves pain to themselves. The film is also a journey of two men, one who has lost faith in the world and the other who has faith in his art. But it's not easy to be a survivor and survive and not matter what you do.. you will be found out.. Vikram's character is that of a harmless harmless person who isn't bad or even active by nature. He has led a sheltered life surrounded by beautiful women and is now dying of heartbreak. He is nervous about what will happen to him, even though he secretly loves Mallika. Vikram's character reflects upon his own life flaws or what he hides from the world. He is constantly worried about what will happen to him, how his life will be after this incident. The other character, Prakash is also a secret lover of Mallika but he has kept his guilt hidden from everyone around him for many years. The movie has many sub-plots and each point focuses on a certain character or their relationship with the others. Vikram and Manas are good friends who have shared a life filled with failure and pain together. How they face these problems comes as a shock to Vikram as he watches his friend's life crumble under repeated failures. According to Ram Gopal Varma's DVD commentary, Taal is a gangster who is based on real-life Mumbai underworld gangster Amar Naik. In the movie, Prakash Mishra is a frustrated painter. In August 2009, Ram Gopal Varma announced that he would remake "Taal" in Hindi. He stated that the film's remake will have the same title and will be a revenge drama with a new script.
